About the program
The NSW Government is offering scholarships to residents of NSW to undertake an accredited interpreting course with UNSW and receive mentoring and employment with Multicultural NSW Language Services.
These scholarships offer candidates the opportunity to study interpreting in one of the following established languages:
Croatian, Greek, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Lao, Macedonian, Malay, Maltese, Nepali, Portuguese, Romanian, Serbian, Swahili, Tagalog, Thai, Turkish, Vietnamese.
This 120-hour program has been designed by the UNSW Interpreting and Translation group and consists of:
- Online: 2-hour classes twice per week for 20 weeks
- Face-to-face: 5-hour classes over 8 Saturdays.
The course will begin in February 2022.
Upon completion, candidates will be eligible to:
- Sit for the NAATI certified Provisional Interpreter certification
- Apply for entry into one of the UNSW formal programs (Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Master of Interpreting).
Scholarship inclusions
This scholarship program covers course fees to the value of $2,500 as well as mentoring and employment on the Multicultural NSW Interpreter Panel for successful graduates.
Please note that candidates will be required to contribute $1,000 to cover the remaining course fees.
For successful graduates, Multicultural NSW will fund the NAATI certification testing costs and fees for the 1st year.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a scholarship you must:
- Live in NSW
- Be an Australian citizen, or have permanent residency (consideration will be given to applications from refugees and asylum seekers)
- Have completed a VET Diploma or equivalent
- Have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5 or equivalent
- Have Language Other Than English (LOTE) native level competence in one or more of the languages stated which will be assessed by UNSW via an entry test
- Be able to attend the face-to-face course component at UNSW in Sydney
- Have computer skills to participate in the online learning format of the course
- Have a genuine commitment to working as an Interpreter.
Please note: NAATI credentials and professional interpreting experience can be used as equivalents to English and LOTE proficiency.
