What is the research about?
This research project explores what happens when a translation is revised by someone other than the translator. The first phase involves surveying Japanese<>English translators. The second phase involves selecting a small group of the translators surveyed to revise one or two short translated texts.
Who is conducting the research?
The research, supervised by Professor Anthony Pym, is carried out by Heather Glass, a Masters student at the School of Languages and Linguistics in the University of Melbourne.
Who is being asked to take part?
This first survey is directed at translators working between Japanese and English who:
- are resident in Australia
- are native speakers of either English or Japanese, and
- currently hold, or have in the past held, at least one NAATI credential (either accreditation or certification).
What do I need to do?
You are invited to complete the survey by following this link, which should take less than 10 minutes. The link also contains more detailed explanation of the research and its aims.
The researcher will ask your opinions on revision. You will also be asked for demographic information to assist the researcher to choose revisers who have similar backgrounds in terms of credential, qualification and experience. Your participation in the research may therefore end with this first screening survey.
If you are interested in further participation and are chosen as a reviser, in the second phase of the research the researcher will contact you to invite you to revise one or two short texts that have been translated from Japanese to English.
