QLD: (Not) Lost in Translation – Training for Translators and Interpreters Working with LGBTQIA+ Refugees and Asylum Seekers

About the event

This event is for translators and interpreters (T&Is), working with LGBTQIA+ refugees and asylum seekers can present different challenges which require a specific skill set. This population faces unique vulnerabilities: many have fled their home countries due to persecution based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, only to encounter new challenges in their host countries. Isolated from their cultural and familial support systems, these individuals often struggle to access essential services like healthcare, legal aid, and housing due to language and cultural barriers. Language plays a powerful role in shaping experiences of inclusion or exclusion, and improper terminology or miscommunication can cause serious harm. By adopting a culturally competent approach, T&Is can help ensure that LGBTQIA+ refugees are understood and respected in their interactions with services.

This workshop will focus on:

  • Understanding terminology and concepts related to gender, sexuality, and identity.
  • Understanding the unique lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ refugees & asylum seekers.
  • Developing practical strategies to enhance culturally sensitive T&I services.
  • Using real-world T&I scenarios to improve cross-cultural dialogues and ethical decision making.

Who Should Attend
This workshop is ideal for T&Is working with LGBTQIA+ refuges and asylum seekers. However, other T&Is can also benefit from this workshop for facilitating communication in settings involving LGBTQIA+ individuals.

This training event is face-to-face and will not be recorded for privacy reasons. More sessions to come in NSW and VIC.
