2M Academy: Free professional development platform for interpreters and translators

Launched early 2021 by 2M Language Services, 2M Academy is Australia and New Zealand’s first free professional development platform for interpreters and translators. 2M Academy offers webinars, training sessions and comprehensive programs delivered by highly skilled trainers including leading academics, experienced NAATI-certified interpreters and translators and industry expert guest speakers from NAATI, AUSIT, NZSTI and tertiary institutions such as RMIT, Monash University, UQ, Tafe S.A. and others. Specialised training is delivered by medical doctors, clinicians, lawyers, judicial officers, representatives from leading government healthcare providers, and psychologists.

Training topics include:
  • Professional ethics and cultural competence when working with Migrant & First Nations communities and hard of hearing or Deaf individuals
  • Skills development & knowledge
  • Technology and tools to support remote delivery and productivity
  • Specialised terminology for navigating sensitive settings
  • Self-care and wellbeing

Examples of recent training courses include “Upskilling Interpreters in Palliative Care Settings”, a 12-month program in collaboration with Brisbane South Primary Health Network, “Court Interpreting at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal” with Judges and Council Members, and workshops on Self-care for Interpreters, provided by QPASST psychologists. Together with AUSIT, the main provider of PD for T&I in Australia, and other organisations, 2M Academy hopes to contribute to the sustainability of the industry.
