About the Program
The NSW Government, in conjunction with TAFE NSW, is offering scholarships to residents of NSW to undertake an accredited interpreting course to gain a Statement of Attainment in Interpreting Skills through TAFE NSW. Successful course graduates will be eligible to become Recognised Practicing Interpreters with the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).
The NSW Interpreter Scholarship Program will be delivered face to face at TAFE NSW Ultimo campus for metro participants and in connected format for Wollongong participants.
Sydney Metro – Participants will be required to attend six hours per week of classes (face-to-face) for 11 weeks, starting in July 2021. The classes will run 2 nights per week (Mondays and Tuesdays, 5:30pm-8:30pm).
Wollongong – Participants will be required to attend six hours per week of classes (online) for 11 weeks, starting in October 2021. The classes will run 2 nights per week (Mondays and Tuesdays, 5:30pm-8:30pm). As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 10 hours of self-study per week.
TAFE NSW teachers will be undertaking all assessment activities as part of this course.
TAFE NSW will issue certificates to participants who successfully complete the course.
The course will include the delivery of four accredited units:
- PSPTIS001 – Apply codes and standards to Ethical practice
- PSPTIS002 – Build glossaries for interpreting and translating assignments
- PSPTIS003 – Prepare to Translate and interpret
- PSPTIS042 – Manage discourses in general settings.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a scholarship you must:
- Live in NSW
- Be an Australian citizen, or have permanent residency (consideration will be given to applications from asylum seekers)
- Successfully fulfil English language proficiency requirements as required by TAFE NSW. TAFE NSW will be conducting English level testing to assess the eligibility of participants in the course
- Have sufficient oral language proficiency in the interpreting language as determined by Multicultural NSW assessors
- Have computer skills to participate in the online learning format for the Wollongong course.
Graduation
Successful graduates will receive mentoring from Multicultural NSW and will be employed as a casual on the Multicultural NSW Interpreter Panel.
