RMIT & NAATI Indigenous Interpreter Training Workshop in Cairns

In February, RMIT and NAATI teamed up to facilitate a face-to-face workshop in Cairns for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language interpreters. The opportunity to bring experienced lecturers and practitioners – Erika Gonzalez and Olga Garcia-Caro, together with interpreters from three Torres Strait languages – Yumplatok, Kala Kawaw Ya and Kala Lagaw Ya, and an Aboriginal language – Wik Mungkan, was greatly appreciated by all involved.

The workshop focused on deepening professional practice, bringing together experienced interpreters and those on the pathway to becoming NAATI certified. A visit to the Magistrates Court topped off a few days of being able to discuss, share, practise and build a stronger network for all.

The collaboration was made possible with the support from RMIT Social Equity Research seed funding, working together with NAATI’s Indigenous Interpreting Project team. We are very grateful to have had the opportunity to bring such a high calibre professional development experience to these interpreters.
